Jon turned Professional at the age of 19 in 1995 and joined the reopened Newmarket Club as Assistant Professional. In 1996 he was the first recipient of the T&RA's Basic Certificate of Proficiency and was awarded the Henry Johns Cup for the Best Young Professional in the same year. Later that year Jon transferred to Hatfield as Assistant Professional to Adam Phillips and succeeded Adam as Head Professional on his departure for Lords in January 2003.

Jon is a very talented player, whose tournament career has been hampered by injury. Nevertheless, he currently plays to a handicap of 1 and is a very competent, patient and analytical coach for both experienced players and newcomers to the game. Notable achievements as a player include winning the Under 18 British Open, four time winner of the Category A 0-9 Championship, winning the Taylor Cup, finalist in the British Open Under 24 Doubles, Finalist in the Under 21 British Open Singles and Finalist in the British Open Doubles with Steve Virgona.

James first picked up a real tennis racket whilst working at the Seacourt Tennis Club, Hayling Island, under Head Professional Dan Jones, where he was the lawn tennis coach with a remit to develop lawn tennis at the club.

James then joined Petworth House Tennis Court in January 2013 where he worked under Chris Bray and Tom Durack making the transition from “Lawn” to “Real Tennis” passing his CPD level 1 Professional certification in December 2013.

In September 2014 James Joined Hatfield House Tennis Cub, Working under the guidance of Head Professional Jon Dawes with the goals to continue improving as a club professional and player, running the Hatfield 1 National league team and competing in tournaments around the country.
