2024 Goldblatt Cup
Last weekend HHTC held its Annual Ladies Handicap Singles event - The Goldblatt Cup
This year’s format consisted of a round robin group of 6 players with Peta Louise Jeffery, Sarah Sullivan, Ciara Sullivan, Ros Emrys-Roberts, Lis Hughes & Jo Chaplin all battling it out against each other in one 6 game set or 30 mins on the timer matches with the top 2 winners qualifying for the final.
There were so many fantastic matches in the group stage with strategic serving, impressive retrieving out of the corners from balls that looked sure to be winners and many dedans hit, the odd grille and even 4 targeted winning galleries!
At the end of the group stage it came down to the last 2 matches to decide who qualified for the final with Ros & Peta Louise coming out on top with 13 points and Sarah narrowly missing out on 11.
The Final was a fantastic battle with both Ros & Peta Louise taking it in turns to dictate play, Peta Louise took the early lead and at 3/1 looked in control but Ros fought back taking some vital games with clinical Dedans and we suddenly found ourselves at 5 all in the deciding game!
Ros started strongly, taking a 40/0 lead but Peta Louise fought back to 40all and after setting a good chase of 2&3 with a great cross court cut shot, it looked like she had it in the bag. After changing ends, Peta Louise served a tight overarm which Ros managed to dig back towards the dedans, narrowly missing and falling back out to 3 yards to lose chase and the match and for Peta Louise to be crowned this year’s Champion!
Congratulations to all that took part this year in a fantastic tournament played in great spirits with everyone having a genuine chance of qualifying and playing some great tennis throughout the day!
Standout shot of the tournament went to Lis & Ros who both managed an incredible half volley off the tambour in their early matches and a special mention to Jo who played really well in her first ever club competition!
We hope to see you all and many more next year battling it out again for the title!
