The Goldblatt Cup 2022 - Ladies Handicap Singles
This Saturday Hatfield also held "The Goldblatt Cup". Our Club Ladies Handicap Singles competition with this years entrees of: Jacqueline Siu, Sarah & Ciara Sullivan, Casey Gerard & Ros Emrys-Roberts.
This years format saw the 5 competitors battle it out in a round robin group playing 4 matches each of one set to 6 or 30 minutes on the timer with the top 2 players progressing to the final.
We had some fantastic handicap battles with Jacqueline Siu our lowest handicap player putting in a great effort and narrowly missing out in her games with Ros & Sarah and also experiencing for the first time the pressures of being banned the tambour and only having one serve in her final match! Sarah & Ros had the tightest match of the tournament with it going down to the buzzer with Sarah squeaking a 5/4 win in the dying seconds but unfortunately this was still just not quite enough to progress to the final.
The two standout players who progressed were Ciara & Casey who played some fantastic tennis throughout the group stage and thoroughly deserved there chance to lift the 2022 title.
Ciara started strongly, serving and moving really well and retrieving everything out of the corners to take an early 2-0 lead. Casey battled back with some great returns into the dedans and setting good chases to get back down the service end. At 2/2 the match looked like it was going to go the distance but Ciara dug deep taking the next 2 tight games which then gave her a cushion she needed to close out the match 6/2 and win the tournament!
Well played to everyone who took part in this years event, it was great to see two of the youngsters make the final and hopefully we will see you all back next year along with other ladies to compete for the 2023 title!
